Switching Broadband Provider

If you already have Broadband with another provider, then you will need to obtain a MAC Code (Migration Authorisation Code) from your existing Broadband provider. This will give you a transfer of your Broadband service with little loss of service (Note you should NOT request the service be ceased). Typically you may experience approximately 30 minutes downtime that will occur during business hours on the day of your migration. This can vary depending on the provider.

The existing service provider will normally provide the MAC within 5-10 working days of request. This may vary on individual providers as some will use delay tactics as they will not want to lose you as a customer. Often when you call to obtain the code they will try and offer you a better deal than what you are currently on to try and tempt you to keep your broadband service with them. The MAC is valid for a period of 30 days from the date that it is issued.

*Important note is that to switch your broadband with a MAC code DO NOT cancel your existing broadband internet access otherwise you may be weeks without internet access. If you cancel your service you typically have to wait 2 weeks for your existing broadband service data (known as a marker) to be cleared off your BT line. This has to be done be BT Wholesale who get the instruction from your existing broadband internet service provider (ISP). Normally It is only then that you will be able to carry out a new broadband line check on your telephone number and then you can wait another 2 weeks for your new broadband service to go live.

You will not be able to switch provider using a MAC code if your existing broadband is delivered via cable, such as Home Choice or Virgin Media (Formerly NTL and Telewest) line. In order to switch, your broadband must be delivered via your BT phone line. If you do wish to move from a cable provider to a new broadband provider you should cancel your cable service and order a BT line. Only once the BT line is active will you be able to register for broadband on that line.
